Vidian are from Poland and play post-metal. This is their latest EP.
I enjoyed Vidian’s second album Transgressing the Horizon. On this release the band showcased their experimental blend of post-, progressive, modern and even death metal, coming across as a kind of post-death metal band that could be compared to a band like Gorguts if they really started to follow Cult of Luna down the post-metal path.
On this new EP Vidian continue to explore their style; over these 18 minutes the band throw all of their influences into a mixer, showing that they have the skill to pull everything together effectively and have it not sound messy or disjointed.
Emotive post-metal melodies are a given for anything like this, but Vidian can also have a lot of meat to their rhythm guitars when they want to. I think on A Piece of the End the band are allowing their melodic side to come through even more than previously, although they still have a dark, apocalyptic sound in other areas. They seem to have progressed to the point now though where the death metal has been pretty much stripped from their sound, leaving a polished, new entity behind. I do like, however, that they still have an aggressive streak in them.
The singer’s plaintive, agonised cleans are joined by more traditionally post-metal shouted harsh vocals. Both are performed well and are sub-genre appropriate. He shows a fair amount of variety compared to a lot of similar types of bands, ranging in styles comparable to the singers of Neurosis and Cult of Luna with ease.
I’ve enjoyed this short glimpse into Vidian’s lives, and A Piece of the End is both well-written and performed.
